Local high school senior developed “Steer Clear” app to combat drunk driving
Staten Island, NY – January 12, 2018….Congressman Dan Donovan (NY-11) today honored Kathleen Coen, a senior at Notre Dame Academy, for winning the 2017 Congressional App Challenge. The Challenge is a nationwide competition that encourages students to pursue an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education.
Congressman Donovan said, “Congratulations to Kathleen on developing this great tool. Technology will continue to drive the economy during Kathleen’s generation, and the skillset she’s developing will be incredibly useful. I love the concept of this app with a purpose, and Kathleen’s family should be very proud.”
Kathleen’s winning app, Steer Clear, attempts to alleviate the social pressures of parties and helps users find free and safe rides home. Party-goers can enter a special code created for that party and join as either a “party animal” or a designated driver. Participants needing a ride home are paired with a designated driver at the party through the Steer Clear app, helping to avoid drunk driving. Donovan honored Kathleen with a certificate of commendation for her application development at a ceremony at his Staten Island District Office.
Entries were reviewed by a panel of local experts and judged on originality, creativity, and quality of the app design. Kathleen’s winning app will be exhibited on a digital display in the U.S. Capitol building and on the Congressional App Challenge website.
The judges were John Abi Habib, President of mCloudServ LLC; Frank Floridia, creative director of Electoral Media; and Anthony Rapacciuolo, founder and CEO or PRcision LLC.
