Betty Jensen

Dr. Betty Jensen earned a Ph.D. in physics from Columbia University, and worked in the energy sector for over 25 years, working her way from senior physicist to manager of research and development.  Over the years, her research covered both nuclear and fossil energy. Later, she focused on energy and the environment. During this time, Dr. Jensen served on numerous advisory committees and has over 60 publications/presentations in major conferences. While working, Dr. Jensen continued her education and earned an MBA in finance from St. John's University. 

 

Dr. Jensen has always had a strong interest in teaching.  She tutored in math and physics from an early age and taught at Columbia University and the City University of New York during her doctoral studies.  Dr. Jensen took early retirement and returned to teaching. She has been teaching in the science department at Notre Dame Academy since 2006, teaching primarily physics and AP Physics.  

 

Dr. Jensen is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland Global Campus (formerly University of Maryland University College) since 2008, where she teaches in the online graduate environmental management program.

  • IEEE 1680.1 revisions of environmental standards for personal computer products-member of working group
  • International Energy Agency - Peer reviewer for Report on Trace Element Emissions
  • Northeast States and Eastern Canadian Provinces Mercury Study - Scientific Peer Reviewer for the report
  • Participant in Bi-national (US and Canada) Toxics Strategy Team, providing support to the bi-national effort.
  • Participant in the Commission for Environmental Cooperation's (US, Canada, and Mexico) Panel of Experts on Mercury.
  • Peer Reviewer for EM Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association
  • Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory Utility Committee -- Member
  • Office of Technology Assessment Panel on Magnetic Fusion Energy -- Panel member
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology Electric Utility Program -- Advisor to the nuclear and environmental programs.
  • New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Comparative Risk Project -- Member of Human Health Technical Working Group and Socioeconomic Technical Working Group.
  • Minnesota Mercury Contamination Reduction Initiative - Advisor to Minnesota state-led effort leading to the documentation of sources of mercury in the state, transport and impact issues, and recommended course of action.

 

Dr. Jensen was a member of the Air & Waste Management Association Committee on Education and participated in the developing tools for teachers: “Environmental Resource Guide.”   The Guide is used as teaching resources on the environment for developing curricula for K-12 students.
